Dhaka, July 25 (bdnews24.com) – The High Court on Sunday served a ruling upon the government and the anticorruption commission, asking why the money laundering prevention law would not be termed 'illegal'.
The bench of justices Mamnun Rahman and Syeda Afsar Jahan gave the order following a petition by Jahirul Islam, a lawyer.
The petition says the law passed on Feb 24 last year became effective on Apr 25, 2008. But according to Section 35 (2) of the constitution, no law can be given 'retrospective effect'.
The petitioner also stated that the bill was presented to the parliament as a money bill, not as an Act.
He also claimed that crimes related to money laundering must be dealt with the contemporary law.
Fakhrul Islam argued for the petitioner while assistant attorney general Rashed Jahangir represented the state during the hearing.
