Breakthrough in $4m 1994 Vic robbery

Fri, Jan 2, 2014

After almost 20 years, Victorian detectives believe they are a step closer to solving a daring $4 million armoured car robbery committed on a Melbourne freeway by four people posing as road workers.

Police believe gangland figures and possibly an Armaguard employee were behind the 1994 "road gang" robbery.

Up to five people were involved in the robbery, in which four heavily-armed offenders disguised as road workers robbed an Armaguard van on the Monash Freeway at Richmond on June 23, 1994. The gang escaped in two getaway cars with $4 million.

Detectives last week charged a Melbourne lawyer, alleging he tried to launder a portion of the stolen money.

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Steve Fontana would not name the lawyer or specify the charges, but said police were confident they could still trace the stolen cash.

"We have charged someone with money laundering offences and we believe that we know where a substantial amount of that money went," he said on Monday.

The involvement of Purana detectives, best known for investigating a string of gangland murders a decade ago, indicates the suspects' position in the criminal food chain.

"We believe that the criminals involved in this were very well organised and very sophisticated and a number of the (suspects') names indicated that they are gangland-type individuals," Mr Fontana said.

"This was very well planned. It was violent.

"These offenders were armed with weapons, firearms.

"They were very confident and brazen in terms of setting up roadworks at the time, so the planning and sophistication that went into it was exceptional."

The sudden public flurry of police activity comes soon after Armaguard offered a $100,000 reward.

Mr Fontana said the case was "very solvable" and police believed an Armaguard employee may have been part of the plot.

Detectives hope to identify a man and a woman who visited a Melbourne CBD bank on August 19, 1994, to exchange $40,000 in cash police say came from the heist.

The pair became spooked and disappeared, leaving behind some of the money.

"We've got very good vision of these two people. We had a lot of intelligence provided at the time and ... there seemed to be a common theme with a number of the offenders that were nominated (by informants)," he said.
