Angola: Anti-Money Laundering Law in Line With Constitution - Court
Sat, Sep 6, 2014
Luanda — The Constitutional Court (TC) Friday in Luanda ruled that the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-terrorism Financing Law fully complies with the Angolan Constitution and rejected the Bar Association (OAA)?s appeal to verify the constitutionality of various clauses of the said law.
The information is contained in a TC press release that reached Angop on Friday, stating it sees no unconstitutionality in the clauses of the Anti-Money Laundering and Count-Terrorism Financing Law as suggested by the OAA.
According to the source, the OAA appeal stemmed from the violation of the lawyers' professional secrecy contained in the said law, particularly concerning the duty imposed on the law practitioners to disclose facts that suggest the occurrence of crime they eventually learn of through clients who seek their services.
In its ruling of August 26 this year, the TC decided not to declare the unconstitutionality of the clauses submitted to it for verification, after realising that the restrictions imposed on the lawyers over professional secrecy are necessary in face of public interest and the need for successful fight against money laundering and terrorism.
