Doha: The Qatari Financial Information Unit of Qatar’s National Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing Committee (NAMLC) last evening signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the British Financial Intelligence Unit in the presence of the Deputy Governor of the Qatar Central Bank (QCB), Sheikh Fahd bin Faisal Al Thani, who is also the president of the Committee.

The MoU aims to strengthen coordination and cooperation between the two sides in the fight against money laundering and the financing of terrorism.

The agreement was signed for Qatar by the Head of Qatari Financial Information Unit, Sheikh Ahmed bin Eid Al Thani, while on behalf of Britain it was signed by Deputy Director of International Crime and Organized Crime Agency, David Armond.

Following the signing of the MoU, Sheikh Ahmed bin Eid Al Thani said that the agreement aims to strengthen coordination and cooperation between the two units in both countries in combating money laundering and the financing of terrorism, stressing the depth of cooperation between Britain and Qatar in this area.

He added that this is the fourth MoU signed with foreign units. The first one was signed with the Japanese unit, the second one with the United Arab Emirates and the third one with Malaysia.

The Qatari Financial Information Unit, he said, intends to sign a number of memoranda of understanding during the current year with a number of foreign financial units.
